Visa & entry (important)

Many nationalities can visit Hong Kong visa-free for short stays, but eligibility, length of stay, conditions and policies change. This site does not publish a definitive visa-free country list and is not legal advice. Before you fly, check the official Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) website for the latest visitor information, passport validity expectations and return/onward ticket rules. Any arrival registration or e-services must follow official channels.

Airport arrival

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is on Chek Lap Kok. After baggage claim, follow signs for Airport Express, buses, taxis or hotel shuttles. Octopus sales/top-up and SIM/eSIM counters are available airside/landside (vendors and prices change — compare on the spot).

Airport Express

Fast rail to Hong Kong Station (near Central) or Kowloon Station, then transfer to the urban MTR. In-town check-in services may be available (terms set by MTR/Airport Express). Frequent trains — good with luggage or tight schedules.

MTR

Covers Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, much of the New Territories, Disneyland, Tung Chung and more. Clear English/Chinese signs. Pay with Octopus, contactless bank cards/mobile pay where supported, or single-journey tickets.

Octopus

Stored-value card for transport plus convenience stores and many restaurants (tourist vs regular products have different rules). Buy/top up at customer service centres, convenience stores or machines. Refunds of remaining value follow official rules and may include a fee.

Ferries & Star Ferry

The Star Ferry links Central/Wan Chai with Tsim Sha Tsui — cheap harbour views. Outlying island ferries (e.g. Mui Wo, Cheung Chau) leave from Central piers.

Taxis

Red (urban), green (New Territories) and blue (Lantau) taxis serve different zones. Luggage may cost extra; cross-harbour tunnel tolls are usually paid by passengers. Meters are standard — confirm the meter is on.

SIM / eSIM

Prepaid SIMs at the airport, convenience stores and carrier shops; travel eSIMs can be bought before departure. Check activation steps and data caps. Free Wi‑Fi exists in some MTR/malls — quality varies.
